The study also found that 61 percent of Facebook users have taken a break from the site. The most common reason cited for the "Facebook vacation" was lack of time, with 21 percent of users saying they were too busy. Ten percent said they just didn't like the site, and another 10 percent said the content wasn't relevant.
Reasons users gave for quitting Facebook altogether included: "It's a gossipy thing," "My account was compromised" and "Not enough privacy."
Even as millions are disconnecting from Facebook, Pew found that social-networking usage has surged over the past three years. In 2009, 47 percent of online adults visited social networking sites. That number now stands at 69 percent, with the vast majority of those users (92 percent) maintaining Facebook accounts.
Overall, roughly two-thirds of online American adults use Facebook. The company claims more than 1 billion users worldwide.
